Internal logic: the laws your world obeys

A world is believable when it is consistent, not when it is realistic.

Internal logic is the set of laws that hold in your world whether or not anyone explains them.

It is the difference between a world that feels real and a world that feels realistic. Realism is a style. Consistency is a structure. Audiences forgive impossible physics instantly, and never forgive a rule that breaks without reason.

If the thesis is what the world argues, internal logic is how the world enforces it.

Why consistency beats realism

Ghibli worlds are full of things that cannot happen. They are also airtight, because the impossible things behave the same way every time. Spirits have manners. Wind has intent. The rules are never stated and never broken.

Compare that to the average AI feed, where every image obeys a different physics. One frame has volumetric fog, the next has none. One has wet streets, the next is bone dry, in the same city, at the same hour. Nothing is technically wrong, and nothing feels like anywhere.

Audiences forgive impossible. They do not forgive inconsistent.

The five questions

Five answers give you a world with enforceable laws. Write them down before you generate anything, and be specific enough that a stranger could apply them.

The third question is the one people skip, and it is the strongest one. Which brings us to the part of this fundamental that changes how people work.

The negative space of logic

Additions are easy. Anyone can add fog, add neon, add ruins. Exclusions are what make a world feel authored, because an exclusion has to be held across every single image.

These are the kinds of rules that do the most work:

Read that last one again. A world with no food is immediately unsettling, and you cannot say why. That is the machinery of internal logic: the audience feels a rule they cannot name.

Exclusions also make prompting easier, because they give you the negative half of the brief. Most people write only what they want. The world is defined by both halves.

A world whose thesis is “the divine is indifferent.”

Every prompt in that world now writes itself, and every off-world output is obvious. A warm lamp is a violation. A plant is a violation. A cast shadow is a violation. You are no longer judging images by whether they are good.

Common mistakes

  1. Defining only what exists. Without exclusions, the model fills the gaps with its defaults and the world dissolves into generic.
  2. Writing laws too vaguely to enforce. “Gritty” is not a law. “Every surface is dust-loaded and nothing has been cleaned in a decade” is.
  3. Breaking a law for one great image. The audience will not notice the great image. They will notice that the world stopped being trustworthy.
  4. Confusing internal logic with worldbuilding trivia. Nobody needs your calendar system. They need to know what the light does.

Practice

  1. Answer the five questions for a world you are already building. Write them as one short list you can keep beside you while generating.
  2. Add three exclusions. At least one should be socially strange rather than visually strange, like the food example.
  3. Generate ten images. Then audit them against your own laws and count the violations. The number will be higher than you expect, and that is the value of the exercise.
